tradeguessr is a free, browser-based candlestick pattern training tool. It was built on the premise that pattern recognition is a learnable skill — and that the best way to learn it is through deliberate, scored practice on real historical data, not through reading textbooks.
The trading education industry has a problem: most of it is passive. Books, courses, and YouTube videos teach you the vocabulary of technical analysis without giving you the opportunity to practise applying it. You can read about hammer candlesticks for an hour and still fail to identify one quickly on a live chart under pressure.
tradeguessr exists to close that gap. Every session presents you with real historical charts, asks you to make a concrete price prediction, and scores your accuracy immediately. The goal is not to make you a profitable trader — that requires far more than pattern recognition. The goal is to make one specific skill, reading a candlestick chart, faster and more accurate through deliberate, measurable practice.
All charts in tradeguessr use real historical market data sourced from a professional-grade data provider used by institutional traders and quantitative research firms. The data consists of real OHLC (open, high, low, close) candles across multiple US equity tickers and timeframes.
Tickers and dates are hidden during gameplay to prevent players from using external knowledge about a specific stock's history. The challenge is to read the chart on its own merits, not to recall what happened to a particular company on a particular date.
Each round is scored based on the percentage distance between your predicted close price and the actual close price of the hidden candles. The scoring formula rewards precision and penalises large errors non-linearly:

A perfect session score of 5,000 points requires placing your target within 0.5% of the actual close on all five rounds. The global leaderboard shows all-time high scores; a score above 3,500 consistently places you in the top tier of players.
